This week’s parshah is Parshat Ki Teitzei. Like many of the parshiyot towards the end of the Torah, it teaches laws needed to create a just, fair, and peaceful society. One of the obligations we learn in Ki Teitzei is to return lost items to their owners. Generally, we apply this in the context of objects or lost property. In the month of Elul, as we approach the High Holidays, we can also consider how to make a spiritual ‘return’ – finding ways to return to ourselves those values, approaches, sense of self and relationships that we may have lost over the course of the year. This Shabbat, may we all find ways to return both physically and spiritually to strengthen ourselves, our community, and our world. I spoke with some Grade Two students about returning lost items; listen to what they can teach us.
