There is a story in the Talmud about a man named Choni Ha'meagel who was very wise and very curious. While taking a walk one day, Choni saw an older man planting a carob tree. Choni asked the man, “How long will it take until this carob tree bears fruit?

The man answered, “Seventy years.”

Choni then asked the man, “Do you think you will live seventy more years and eat the fruit from this tree?”

The man then answered, “My ancestors planted for me. Likewise, I am planting for my children.”

One of the founding pillars at Heschel is a commitment to environmental education and stewardship as a key element of Jewish teaching. We are proud to have been an Ontario Eco School for over a decade and more recently to have become the first Jewish Day School to reach Platinum Eco School Status.
