This year, The Toronto Heschel School’s Environment Committee has worked on many exciting projects. For the past few years, we have also worked very hard to reach Platinum EcoSchool status. On our road to Platinum certification, our first initiative of the year was a Tu B’shvat project in which all members of the Environment Committee collaborated to create an online environment trivia game for all grades. Our second initiative was a garden-naming contest. For this, we sent out a survey asking what each individual thought we should name the Heschel Garden. We will have exciting news to share soon about our decision! The final project we designed was a school-wide battery contest. For a month, we had everyone in the school collect dead batteries from around their homes and bring them in so that we could properly recycle them. We then weighed each class’ batteries to determine the largest amount. The class of Grade 4 Drorim won the contest and was rewarded with a pizza party. These are some of the many fun and amazing programs the Toronto Heschel School’s Environment Committee coordinated this school year despite some of the toughest conditions due to COVID-19.
