The Heschel Gallery is a Heschel Hive column that appears at the end of every rotation throughout the year. It features students’ artwork with an explanation of the project by Morah Lisa for context. This is a wonderful way to appreciate the diversity and beauty of the students’ creations!
Grade 6 students have been hard at work in the art room over the past two rotations.
They recently learned about artist-in-residence, Marc Chagall, studying how his upbringing in a Lithuanian/Belarusian Shtetl deeply influenced his work. They also considered the impact of his formative years studying art in Paris.
Each student selected an artwork by Chagall that reflected the themes, events, or characters in a scene they studied in Shmuel Aleph. They then enlarged their image onto a canvas using a grid to help them replicate shapes and proportions without distorting the overall image.
They applied their colour-mixing skills to match colours in the original artworks and studied how Chagall used expressive brushstrokes and many layers of paint to achieve his signature style.
These artworks will serve as the backdrop for the students’ upcoming Shmuel Aleph presentation, taking place in June.
