As we prepare for our annual Poetry Festival on November 8, we’re excited to highlight the creative journey of our Grade 6 students, who recently completed their very first poem of the year! Under the Generative Topic, “We Come Closer Through Our Words,” students dove into the art of personification by writing poems from the perspective of everyday school supplies they use regularly.

This project has sparked their imagination, encouraging them to think about the objects that accompany them in their learning environment. Each student crafted a poem by generating verbs and vivid descriptions that reflect their chosen object’s thoughts, feelings, actions, and reactions throughout a typical school day. From the eager anticipation of a pencil waiting to jot down brilliant ideas to the tired sigh of a worn-out eraser, these poems bring to life the often-overlooked personalities of school supplies.

Can you guess the subjects of these delightful poems based solely on the descriptive words used? It’s a fun challenge that invites readers to engage with the text in a new and meaningful way.

In the upcoming week, the students will take their skills to the next level by writing new poems focused on Jewish objects. This exercise will allow them to compare their writing progress and see how their understanding of personification has evolved since this initial attempt.

We’re proud of our Grade 6 poets for their creativity and growth! Stay tuned for more updates as they continue their poetic journey!
