In today’s Student Scene, Grade 8 student Ava and Morah Yarden tell us about the drum workshop that took place earlier this week.

On Tuesday, students participated in a drum workshop and created beautiful First Nations hand drums as part of their Art and Civilizations curriculum. Rick Monaco shared different drumming styles as well as a tutorial on how to create these drums. After much pulling and stretching, and lots of hitch knots, students came away with a beautiful drum of their own. Soon the students will paint their drums with a design of their own that combines a symbol taken from First Nations culture, and a bracha from the Amidah, the central prayer of the daily tefillah. Students reported feeling challenged but satisfied by this wonderful project.
