Last week, we celebrated Martin Luther King and Abraham Joshua Heschel week. The Tikkun Olam committee organized this special week of awareness. During this week we taught the students about who Abraham Joshua Heschel and Martin Luther King were. We read the book “As Good As Anybody” by Richard Michelson to students in JK to grade 4. The kids really enjoyed the story and understood the message that everybody should be equal. We read this book to the students because we want to remember what Heschel and MLK did and how they affected our lives today and what they risked to help their community.

As a Tikkun Olam project, we decided to bake cookies shaped like the earth because we felt like the cookies would bring spirit to the week of activists. The money we collected will be donated to the Terry Fox organization. We chose to donate to the Terry Fox Run because MLK and AJ Heschel marched while protesting, and we realized that Terry Fox did the same thing but to raise awareness for cancer research.

“When I marched in Selma, I felt my legs were praying.” -AJ Heschel.

We think that Terry Fox had the same idea in mind while running.
