Last March, we all watched in utter awe and amazement as our Heschel teachers and staff quickly pivoted to provide a platform of online learning to our students. And now, at the dawn of a new school year, we continue to navigate through an environment that is ever-changing, but one thing remains the same: The Toronto Heschel School’s leadership and staff team are committed to the education, health, and safety of our students, staff, and community.
Preparations for this new school year have brought about significant unexpected expenses, in order to hire additional staff, provide personal protective equipment (PPE), additional furniture, professional development for our staff, and technological equipment and enhancements throughout the school. We need your help to raise funds to help cover these unexpected COVID expenses, estimated at $200,000!
As we approach the High Holiday season, we are reminded of one key prayer, Unetaneh Tokef, which states, “u-teshuvah, u-tefillah, u-tzedakah, ma’avirin et roah hagezerah”—“Repentance, prayer, and tzedakah” soften the severity of any decree by God. Jewish tradition teaches us that we have a direct and active role in responding to our fate and the fate of our world for the coming year.
As we seek ‘tefillah’ (prayer) during these holy days, we have an opportunity to be hopeful in what this year brings. While there may be a lot of unknowns as we move forward this school year, those unknowns are what we can look to, to help ground us, and to think about the change we wish to see in the world.
While we continue to navigate these unprecedented times, we ask for you to consider supporting The Toronto Heschel School, with your tzedakah, during this holiday season. Thank you for being a part of our Toronto Heschel School community.
With warm wishes for a Happy and healthy New Year, Shana Tovah Umetukah,
Dr. Greg Beiles Marisa Reby
Head of School Director of Development
