This week’s parshah, Shoftim, describes many of the laws the people of Israel needed to create a just and fair society. The Parshah contains the phrase Tzedek Tzedek Tirdof — Justice, Justice, you shall pursue — which aptly describes the vision and life-work of Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel. Heschel pursued justice and fairness through his work in the Civil Rights Movement, opposition to the Vietnam War and fight for religious freedom for Jews in the former Soviet Union. I asked our Grade 6 students how we can perform the middah of “pursing fairness” in our own lives. Here’s what they taught us.
