UJA Federation of Greater Toronto provides funding for Jewish Education at The Toronto Heschel School

As an Ontario EcoSchool, we join with hundreds of other educators who also recognize the importance of tending to the Creation, teaching and learning about energy, innovation and looking creatively for solutions to global issues – both connected with the physical environment and with human impact, public health, justice and equality. These are all part of the route an innovative school must take. An EcoSchool addresses what is taught, how we run our school and how we design and use our school grounds. Its central focus is supporting students and staff in caring for and protecting the environment where they spend so many hours every week. It is a big job that entails our curriculum leaders, facility services and caretaker, administrators, students and parent representatives devoting monthly time as an EcoTeam. The EcoTeam spearheads projects that address ecological literacy, conservation of energy, minimization of waste, greening our school grounds and purchasing environmentally thoughtful products.

As an Ontario EcoSchool with Silver certification for the second year in a row, we have been recognized by exceptional outside standards as being on the right track.

We are teaching our students to “pray with their feet”, to actively engage in tikkun olam (the repair of the world) and to re-engage in a sense of awe and wonder. We continue to teach today’s children and the future generation that our actions can and will make a difference.
